28 May CBD as a Potential Treatment for Neurodegenerative Disease
The human brain, just like any other organ, can suffer from degenerative diseases. This means that the cells forming the organ are gradually degrading, without any new ones to replace them, which will lead to malfunctions. In other words, the brain will slowly lose its functionality, one step at a time. In the case of neurodegenerative disease, the neurons are dying, being lost forever, until the brain completely shuts down, not having enough neurons to continue functioning. Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s are two known neurodegenerative diseases that affect a high number of people all over the world.
The bad part is that there is no cure for such diseases. Once the illness got installed, the process is irreversible. While it is hard to determine the real causes lying behind these conditions, a common factor that was noticed by researchers is high iron accumulations in the brain. A study made on animal models showed that CBD oil can be used to prevent excessive iron accumulations in this particular organ. Thus, CBD oil has a good potential of becoming a future treatment in the case of this type of conditions. Or, at least, to offer better management for the symptoms generated by neurodegenerative diseases.
The study behind this discovery was meant to see how iron accumulations can be connected with the appearance of the disease. As found out in rats, iron poisoning produces similar symptoms to those triggered by neurodegenerative diseases. While it is true that more research must be made, this study alone point toward the fact that cannabidiol could be used to ameliorate symptoms. According to researchers, iron accumulation leads to mitochondrion dysfunctions and, implicit, death of neurons. This happens due to the fact that DNA sequences from this particular compartment are deleted by the onset of the illness. Cannabidiol can help by giving back some of the mitochondrion’s functions when it comes to iron metabolism. Practically, CBD acts like the genes responsible for this particular role. What researchers didn’t manage to find out is how CBD is capable of doing this.
But, in spite of the promising results so far, there is much to be discovered about cannabidiol and its potential as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases. For the moment, this study tested just several scenarios, many details still being left on the outside. As an example, the power of CBD oil to remove iron accumulation from the brain was not tested or checked. So, CBD oil is only counteracting the effects generated by iron deposits, while they’re still present in the brain. In this case, the treatment with CBD oil will have to be ongoing, keeping the action of iron restrained as much as possible. Also, CBD oil will not turn into a cure for neurodegenerative diseases, but, at least, it will be able to improve the life quality of patients. It is known that an advancing neurodegenerative disease will lead to serious impairments, not allowing a person to perform regular daily tasks. Thus, it is comforting to know that there might be something that could offer a more comfortable and decent life for all those suffering from brain damage due to loss of neurons.
